S Subhashini, whose brother Surjith has been arrested on charges of killing a Scheduled Caste youth Kavin Selvaganesh, on Thursday released a video in which she acknowledged she and the victim were in love. She claimed her Sub Inspector parents, arraigned in the FIR, were “innocent”.

The Siddha practitioner claimed Kavin had requested her to disclose their relationship to her parents only after six months “as he wanted to settle down” (in his career). However, Surjith had told her parents about their affair on May 30. “When my father asked me, I denied I was in love.”

According to her, Surjith wanted Kavin to meet her parents as he felt her marriage would pave way for his “progress”.

Ms Subhashini said she had asked Kavin to meet her on July 28. However, on the fateful July 27, he had come to the clinic where she worked with his grandfather who had sutures on his head. She claimed he left while she was explaining the procedure to his mother and others.

“When they were about to leave the clinic, we realised Kavin was not there. Our attempts to reach him over the phone failed. Since Kavin’s mother was hungry, I asked her to go for lunch and told her I would ask him to join them when he comes,” she said. “But everything (the murder) happened after that,” she said.

While she did not explain why her brother killed Kavin, she appealed to people to “stop speculating” and claimed her parents were not aware (about the crime).
