Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) has commissioned an 110 kV traction sub-station (TSS) to energise locomotives on its network at Karwar.

KRCL Chairman and Managing Director Santhosh Kumar Jha, on July 30, inaugurated the sub-station in the presence of senior officers, including Regional Railway Manager at Karwar Asha Shetty, Senior Regional Electrical Engineer in Goa Vinayaka Naik, Regional Electrical Engineer at Karwar Babu Kadle and others.

The Karwar TSS facilitates open access billing for the Konkan Railway, and the move was a win-win for the Corporation and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd.

₹2 crore savings

The Karwar TSS gets supply through a dedicated 110 kV line from the Kadra power station of the Kali hydel project. With smart load optimisation, the Karwar TSS is expected to deliver reduced power bills, improved voltage profile, uninterrupted train operations during outages and enhanced line capacity for running more trains. It further said the power bills were expected to come down by ₹2 crore a year.

KRCL said the Railways could run more number of freight and passenger trains on the section with improved traction power reliability. The new facility has thus opened doors for higher revenue generation through increased throughput, it said, terming the new TSS as a strategic leap toward cost-effective, reliable, and green electric traction on the Konkan route.
