Travelling through Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has just become a more comforting experience, thanks to a new initiative that brings therapy dogs to the terminal. The airport has deployed trained therapy dogs at key locations within the airport, offering passengers a moment of calm amid the usual rush of air travel.
Launched under the initiative titled ‘Paws and Peace’, the programme places two therapy dogs at designated zones beyond the security check, both in domestic and international departure areas. These dogs, always accompanied by trained handlers, are available for interaction with passengers for four to six hours each day.
The selected locations, including retail areas and boarding gates, have been chosen to maximise visibility and allow for spontaneous engagement with travellers, according to an airport official.
The therapy dogs will not be subjected to excessive activity. Their workday is limited to a few hours, allowing them enough time to rest and recharge. During their time on duty, passengers can enjoy a variety of gentle engagement activities such as petting sessions, a supervised game of fetch, or simply spending a few quiet minutes in their company. Dedicated ‘selfie zones’ have also been set up to allow travellers to capture the moment.
The airport authorities have been clear that interactions with the dogs are entirely voluntary. The dogs will not approach passengers unless invited, ensuring that no traveller feels uncomfortable. “Their presence is meant to be gentle and soothing, ideal for those who may be nervous flyers or simply in need of a brief escape from the crowds and noise of airport terminals,” they added.
To maintain a safe and respectful environment, RGIA has issued a set of guidelines for those who wish to engage with the animals. Passengers are encouraged to approach the dogs calmly, follow the handlers’ instructions, and avoid startling the animals with loud noises or sudden movements. While taking pictures with the dogs is allowed, flash photography is discouraged. Children must be accompanied by adults, and those with allergies are advised to maintain a safe distance.
