IndiGo on Saturday (August 2, 2025) announced a interim flying ban on a passenger for assaulting a co-traveller on a Mumbai-Kolkata flight after the latter suffered a panic attack onboard and demanded that the aircraft return to the parking bay.

“In line with our commitment to discourage such unruly behaviour onboard flights, the individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights, in accordance with regulatory provisions,” IndiGo posted on X.

Airline sources said that the ban was imposed for a period of 30 days pending the outcome of an enquiry instituted under the provisions laid down by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for unruly passengers.

Earlier in the day, a post from West Bengal’s Bidhan Nagar police station identified the assailant as Hafijul Rahman and the victim as Hossain Ahmed Majumder and said that a legal action in the matter had been initiated after the airline handed over the attacker to the police after Friday’s flight.

The victim, who was a first-time air traveller, suffered a panic attack as the aircraft was taxiing from Mumbai on Friday, and demanded that he be allowed to deboard. This resulted in commotion onboard as passengers were furious that it would result in a delay.

Unruly conduct in a flight can invite a flying ban of three months to two years depending on the severity of the misdemeanour after an airline conducts an enquiry. The enquiry is required to be completed within a 30-day period.
