A 63-year-old fisherman, who ventured into the sea on board a mechanised boat from Kottaipattinam fishing harbour in the district, accidentally fell into the sea and died in the late hours on Saturday.
Coastal Security Group sources gave the name of deceased fisherman as M. Malaisamy, 63, a native of Tharuvaikulam in Thoothukudi district.
The sources said Malaisamy along with three other fishermen — Murugan, 53, Kumar, 53, and Murugan, 40, set sail for fishing on Saturday morning. They were fishing about 15 nautical miles off the coast when Malaisamy accidentally fell into the sea from the boat.
The other fishermen rescued Malaisamy and provided first aid. However, he had died. The dead fisherman was brought to the shore on Sunday morning by the other fishermen and the body was sent to the mortuary of the Government Hospital, Manamelkudi.
