Marking a key milestone, flight operations commenced from the new terminal building in Thoothukudi airport on Sunday. The first flight to arrive at the terminal was an IndiGo service from Chennai, which landed at 7:35 a.m.

The new terminal of the airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 26. In line with Airport Authority of India’s plan to increase passenger capacity of the airport to 20 lakh per annum in the next five to 10 years and to enhance Thoothukudi’s manifold connectivity, a terminal spanning 17,340 sq km has been planned.

The new terminal also features extended runways, with a night landing facility for handling wide bodied aircraft. Moreover, to ensure hassle free handling of passengers, 21 check-in counters, seven baggage scanners, three aerobridges, over 600 passenger seats, captivating mural arts and many other amenities were created in the new terminal.

At present, the airport operates seven day flights regularly including six services to Chennai and one to Bengaluru.

An official from Thoothukudi airport said the old terminal would be decommissioned and all flights operated from the new terminal.

In a social media post, IndiGo airlines announced that, “Effective from August 3, All IndiGo flights to and from Thoothukudi will operate from the new terminal building, offering a refreshed and enhanced airport for our customers.”
