Gynaecologist and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi N.V.N. Somu launched a women development cell (WDC) at Amal College of Advanced Studies, Nilambur, on Saturday (August 2).

Dr. Somu also inaugurated a ‘step strong’ project launched under the WDC for health, hygiene and safety of women. She distributed menstrual cups to students.

Dr. Somu told the students that women had the power to transform the present and future of society. She advised girls to think carefully before making decisions, acknowledging that there might be obstacles. She encouraged them to strive to overcome those challenges and push forward as aspiring professionals.

“We should take pride in our unique abilities: giving birth to children and shaping the future of society,” she said.

P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP, presided over the function. FemiSafe co-founder Noorin Aysha led a class. College management committee member P.V. Mohammed Muneer, college manager P.V. Ali Mubarak, principal K.P. Mohammed Basheer, and coordinator P. Sajida spoke.

The women development cell will function in collaboration with the college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to prioritise students’ health and hygiene, with a specific focus on addressing menstrual-related concerns.

The cell will organise seminars, workshops, counselling sessions, self-defence training, health and hygiene awareness programmes, and skill development activities.

According to college authorities, the cell will tackle gender-based violence, harassment and discrimination, while implementing policies to ensure women’s welfare and safety on campus. Its ultimate goal will be to promote confidence, leadership and social responsibility among women.
