The indefinite strike by State-owned transport corporation employees demanding that the State government clear arrears and revise wages evoked mixed response in Kalaburagi on Tuesday.
As KKRTC buses were found parked at the Central Bus Stand and in depots in the city, private buses were pressed into service to mitigate public inconvenience.
Commuters relying on public transport services in rural areas faced significant disruptions as connectivity remained affected in taluk places. Long distance travellers arriving in the city faced difficulties in reaching their native places.
Police made elaborate security arrangements mainly at bus stands as a precautionary measure.
Police Commissioner Sharanappa S. Dhage and senior officials visited the Central Bus Stand and other areas to assess and ensure that the situation was under control in the city.
Commuters who arrived at the bus stand were seen either making alternative arrangements or cancelling their journey. All railway services scheduled during the morning hours were found packed as many passengers chose to travel by train to reach their destinations.
And, the strike turned profitable for local modes of transportation, including autorickshaws, operating short distances in the city.
âOn a normal day, 250 buses operate on different routes from the Central Bus Stand by 8 a.m. but on Tuesday, only 20-25 buses were operated around that time,â officials said.
