Accumulation of plastic wastes at the Singanallur tank has caused concern among nature enthusiasts.

The Singanallur tank is spread over 250 acres and boasts of 110 bird species, 720 species of bio diversity species, 453 herbal plants, 62 species of butterflies and 22 mammals. The tank is a biodiversity hotspot. In 1989, the DMK Government inaugurated a boat house, only to lie in disuse because of spread of water hyacinth.

Rainwater from Chinnathadagam hills flows through the rural areas and enters the city at Kavundampalayam. After criss-crossing Mettupalayam Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Avanashi Road and Tiruchi road, the water finally enters the Singanallur tank. In its journey of more than ten km, the canal gets polluted due to effluent mixing.

When the tank gets filled up, the surplus water flows through the other side of the tank and it used to reach Sulur tank. At present, the tank bunds are choked with plastics and other waste materials.

Nature enthusiasts say that the Corporation has to act swiftly to remove the plastics and other waste materials and the sewage treatment plant established at the mouth of the tank has to be inaugurated at the earliest.
