A 38-year-old man, who disguised himself by wearing a burqa, was arrested on Thursday for burglary of 31 gold sovereigns at his relative’s house in Ambur town in Tirupattur a few days ago.
Police said the arrested person has been identified as Tanvir Ahmed, a mechanic. Initial inquiry revealed that Tanvir was facing financial problems. In order to get rid of his debts, Tanvir decided to steal valuables from his sister in-law’s house after he learnt that she had savings in gold and silver jewellery and cash in her house.
In order to not get noticed by his relatives, Tanvir wore a burqa and entered the house on July 31. As he broke open the cupboards to take away gold jewellery, Tanvir saw his sister in-law Sultana, who cried for help. Tanvir pushed her and fled with the jewellery.
Based on an alert, Ambur Town police inspected the spot. They analysed CCTV footage on the route. After a detailed investigation with the locals, police questioned Tanvir, who admitted to the crime. A case was registered. He was lodged at the Central Prison in Vellore. Police recovered the entire stolen jewellery. A probe is underway.
