The Chief Minister’s Thayumanavar Scheme, under which families with senior citizens above the age of 70 and persons with disabilities will be provided essential commodities at their doorstep, will be launched on August 12. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will launch the scheme in Chennai for a total of 21,70,454 beneficiaries attached to 16,73,333 family cards under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

An official press release issued in Chennai on Thursday said there were a total of 15,81,364 family cards covering 20,42,657 senior citizens above the age of 70, and 1,27,797 persons with disabilities attached to 91,969 family cards. The data for this scheme have been collected from the Department of Food and Consumer Protection, and given to ground-level officials in the rank of Sub-Registrar.

The goods, including rice, sugar, and oil, will be delivered to these households on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. The items would be supplied through vehicles carrying a staff member each from the 38,809 fair price shops. They would carry electronic weighing scales and e-POS machines.

A total of ₹30.16 crore would be spent on the scheme every year, the release said.
