“Chennai is the Mecca of healthcare. Patients from all over the world come here for treatment, and it is not just for their eyes, they come for treatment for any ailment in the body,” said Amar Agarwal, chairman, Dr. Agarwal’s Group of Eye Hospitals, Chennai.

“One of the most important aspects for human beings is their health. To understand this, close your eyes for just 10 seconds, and you will realise how important your eyes are in your life. Chennai, with its excellent health infrastructure, is a great boon to people who live in the city – they can get the healthcare they need right here.”

Chennai has also become synonymous with medical tourism, and this helps to contribute to the economy, he says.

Chennai has both the old and the new. Its rich history encompasses the second-oldest medical college in the country, Madras Medical College, and the second-oldest eye hospital in the world, the Government Ophthalmic Hospital in Egmore. And now, it excels in new techniques and procedures, points out Dr. Agarwal.

“Health is wealth, and this is a big reason why we should celebrate Madras!” he says.
