A 26-year-old woman, who works as a domestic worker in west Delhi’s Patel Nagar, was arrested for strangling her newborn after giving birth to it in her employer’s bathroom, an officer said on Thursday.
The accused has been charged with Sections 103(1) (murder) and 238(a) (offence of causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information to screen an offender) of the BNS.
The matter came to light on July 28 when a PCR call to the Patel Nagar police station reported the discovery of a dead newborn in a white plastic bag in the parking area of a housing complex in West Patel Nagar, the officer said. A sanitation worker who was collecting garbage had spotted the body, he added.
The accused, who had been working at the house in Patel Nagar since 2023, had told her employers that she was suffering from a medical condition that caused swelling in her abdomen. On July 26, when her employers were out of the house, the accused delivered the baby in the bathroom herself.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused conceived the baby when she went to her native place in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, in November 2024, and became physically intimate with her partner, the officer said. The accused said she conveyed the news of her pregnancy to her partner but he refused to take responsibility and it was because of the ‘social stigma’ that she killed the baby, the officer added.
Following the discovery of the body, the accused’s employers contacted the police and the accused was sent for medical examination. At present, the accused’s partner is being questioned by the police.
