The Chetpet Police have arrested a gang of four men who allegedly stole mobile phones from passengers in crowded buses in the city.
Police said Ram Charan, 25, of Uttar Pradesh has been staying in Kavangarai and working at a private firm. On Wednesday, while Ram Charan was walking along with his friend on SM Road in Chetpet, three unidentified persons waylaid them and robbed the mobile phone and ₹600 from them after brandishing a knife. After the trio fled the scene, they lodged a complaint with the police.
On investigation, the police arrested three suspects — Surya, 26, of Old Washermenpet, Vinodh alias Poochi Vinodh, 25, of Royapuram and Karthik, 27, of Korukkupet. During interrogation, the trio confessed that they monitored bus stands in the city, got into crowded buses, stole mobile phones from passengers and sold them.
Police also arrested Mubarak, 22, of Korukkupet who ran a shop and received mobile phones from the trio and sold them. Police recovered 11 mobile phones from them.
