Actor Huma Qureshi’s cousin, Asif Qureshi, 42, was stabbed to death by two men following a dispute over parking a scooter in Bhogal, south-east Delhi, on Thursday night, a senior police officer said on Friday.
The accused, Ujjwal, 21, and Gautam, 18, have been arrested and booked under Sections 103(1) [murder] and 3(5) [common intention] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (South East) Hemant Tiwari said around 10.30 p.m on Thursday, Ujjwal, a music teacher working in Lajpat Nagar, returned to his home in Bhogal and parked his scooter in front of Qureshi’s house.
“When Qureshi requested him to park his scooter somewhere else, Ujjwal did not pay any heed, and when requested again, he became aggressive and started assaulting Qureshi and called out to his younger brother Gautam downstairs. Gautam joined him and took out a sharp object hidden in his trousers and stabbed Qureshi in the chest,” the DCP said.
Mr. Tiwari said Qureshi was severely injured and pronounced dead on arrival at the National Heart Institute, East of Kailash. The accused fled the spot, and the entire incident was captured in a CCTV camera, he added.
The DCP said both the accused had attacked Qureshi three months ago as well but passersby rescued intervened and stopped the fight. “They had threatened him with dire consequences then,” the officer said.
Ujjwal has no criminal record, while Gautam was previously arrested over an assault case. “Further investigation is under way to ascertain the sequence of events and the role of each accused,” said Mr. Tiwari.
‘Premeditated act’
The deceased’s wife, Shaheen Asif Qureshi, alleged that the murder was premeditated as her neighbours were “jealous of her husband”. “If it were just about the scooter, they could have parked it somewhere else. But they stabbed him in the chest. This was not a spontaneous incident. They did it on purpose,” she alleged.
Ms. Qureshi said her husband worked as a chicken supplier and rarely interacted with those involved in his killing or their families.
Asif’s uncle and the father of Huma Qureshi, Saleem Qureshi, described his nephew as a simple and hardworking man. “It is a murder over a petty issue. It shows how fragile our society has become. People are getting killed for petty reasons,” he said.
