All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal, MP, has said that it has become clear, with the evidence released by Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, that Narendra Modi became Prime Minister not in accordance with the people’s mandate but through manipulation of the voters’ list.

Speaking to the media in Alappuzha on Sunday (August 10, 2025), Mr. Venugopal said a large-scale audit would be conducted to detect irregularities in the voters’ list for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“There are 48 constituencies where the INDIA bloc candidates lost by 50,000 votes or less. The Congress will conduct detailed scrutiny of all of them. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized power by tampering with the voters’ list. Media investigations are now corroborating the evidence that Mr. Gandhi has released in this regard. Yet, the BJP is demanding Mr. Gandhi’s resignation. If a proper investigation is conducted, it is Mr. Modi who should resign,” Mr. Venugopal said.

He said the Election Commission was threatening Mr. Gandhi and the Congress without responding to the allegations of irregularities. “The Election Commission should not try to intimidate us. The Congress will continue its strong fight. Opposition MPs will stage a protest march to the Election Commission’s office in Delhi on Monday (August 11, 2025). It has been proven that the Election Commission’s actions are neither fair nor impartial,” the AICC general secretary said.

Mr. Venugopal said the process of adding bogus voters to the voters’ list had taken place in Kerala as well. “The incident in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency is a serious matter. We know the circumstances under which the BJP candidate won there. In the Alappuzha constituency, where I contested, 35,000 duplicate votes were identified, and this was confirmed by the Kerala High Court. The Congress will conduct inspections to detect manipulation of the voters’ list everywhere, including in Kerala,” he added.

Home delivery of liquor

The Alappuzha MP urged the State government not to proceed with its proposal for online home delivery of liquor.  “It will accelerate the breakdown of law and order. This is a time when the fight against substance abuse needs to be strengthened. The liquor trade is the main agenda of the Left Democratic Front government. The only concern of the government is to find revenue by any means,” he added.
