Seeking the reconstruction of the damaged drainage channel with bridge in their area, a group of residents from Nambirajapuram in ward 14 under Thatchanallur Zone of the Corporation submitted petition during the weekly grievances redress meeting organised by the urban civic body on Tuesday.

The petitioners said sewage was flowing along the streets of Nambirajapuram after the drainage channels in this area were damaged and the flow of drainage from the houses is clogged at several places. Hence, the Corporation should reconstruct the damaged drainage channels again with a bridge to ensure continuous flow of the grey water.

Moreover, the private land through which the drainage was flowing in the past had been converted into housing plots. Hence, the Corporation should construct drainage channels along the private land for properly taking the sewage to the primary channel, they said.

The irrigation channel in Nambirajapuram, which was damaged during the underground drainage work, should also be repaired considering the farmers’ welfare.

“Since the water overflowing from the damaged irrigation channel enters the cultivable lands nearby, farmers of these lands cannot go in for cultivation of any crop. Hence, the Corporation should complete these works before the onset of northeast monsoon,” the petitioners appealed.

A group of residents from Kokkirakulam in ward 31 submitted petition appealing to the Corporation to repair the hand-pumps and the overhead tank in their area.

Councillor V. Jeganathan of ward 5 submitted a petition seeking the re-laying of the roads in Thimmarajapuram, Kakkan Nagar, Police Quarters, VOC Nagar, New Colony and Sangeetha Colony.

“Since the residents are telling me that they would not vote for the DMK if the roads are not re-laid before the Northeast monsoon, the Corporation should pay immediate attention to this serious issue,” Mr. Jeganathan said.

Councillor R. Muthusubramanian of ward 55 submitted a petition seeking the replacement of 28 dead LED bulbs along the overbridge connecting wards 55 and 39. “Even though the road and the overbridge belong to the Department of Highways, the lights are maintained by the Corporation, which should take steps for replacing the defunct lights,” Mr. Muthusubramanian said.

Residents of Raja Nagar in ward 52 in Melapalayam Zone submitted a petition complaining about the supply of drinking water mixed with sewage. Hence, the Corporation should take immediate steps to save the public from the water-borne diseases by repairing or replacing the ruptured drinking water pipes.

Residents of Tuckerammalpuram North Streets submitted a petition seeking re-laying of the road damaged in underground drainage project.
