A day after the UDF council party of the Kozhikode Corporation came out with allegations of serious malpractices in connection with the voters’ list in the Corporation, the district committee of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has also come up with a similar allegation.
Opposition leader at the Kozhikode Corporation council, K.C. Shobhita, and deputy leader K. Moideen Koya had produced the voters’ list before the media on Monday, pointing out that there were 2,820 double entries (multiple votes under the single voters’ ID) within the Corporation, of which 1,500 were in the Beypore zone alone. “There are 1,320 voters with the same voters’ ID. There are as many as nine voters in a building in the Vellayil ward, which has its number marked as zero. Ironically, such a building could not be located”, said Ms. Shobhita.
In another case, there are 70 votes in a single house numbered as 16/29. In reality, there are only three voters in that house. There are cases in which people of different religious faiths have been listed as voters under the same building number. “Finding these discrepancies is difficult. Most of these additional voters do not live in the city. They come and go only during the election”, Mr. Moideen Koya said.
He also said that there were 12,000 houses in Ward 42, while normally there are only around 2,500 houses in a ward. He alleged that this was a deliberate attempt to sabotage the democratic election process.
Meanwhile, M.A. Razak, the district president of IUML, told reporters here on Tuesday that there were 327 voters in one house in Marad ward and cited several similar instances.
The UDF council party, as well as the IUML district committee, has decided to move court against the discrepancies in the voters’ list.
