A 48-year-old police inspector attached to the Law and Order (L&O) wing of Arakkonam Town police was suspended on Wednesday for not taking steps to prevent the murder of a youth in the area despite threats to his life issued by suspects against the victim.

Police said the suspended police officer was identified as Thanga Gurunathan. The order was issued by N. Devarani, IPS, who has been appointed as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for the Kancheepuram Range. Ms. Devarani is holding the additional charge for the Vellore range that covers Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai districts.

The suspension comes in the wake of the arrest of nine persons, including a DMK councillor and her husband, who were arrested in connection with the murder of S. Avinesh, 28, a native of Ammanur village that comes under Arakkonam panchayat union in Ranipet.

In April, Avinesh got into an argument with B. Sudhakar, 47, husband of Arakkonam panchayat union councillor, S. Ashwini, 42, over the parking of vehicles near their house in Ammanur village. Sudhakar was a local financier and real estate agent.

Police said that in a fit of rage, Avinesh attacked Sudhakar with a sharp weapon. Badly injured Sudhakar was admitted at Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvallur, where he was treated and discharged a few weeks later. A case was registered by Arakkonam Town police against Avinesh. A month later, Avinesh was released on conditional bail.

On August 10, as part of bail conditions, Avinesh visited Ratnagiri police station near Arcot town. On his return, a gang hacked him to death. In this connection, along with the councillor and her husband, Regan,32, Anand,43, Vinith,26, Sanjay,24, Jayaprakash,28, Vijayan,65, and Suresh,45, were arrested and lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Further probe is under way.
