Eleven panchayats and three municipalities have been put under surveillance after African Swine Flu was confirmed in pigs at a farm in Padiyoor grama panchayat, prompting the district administration to take strict control measures under the Disaster Management Act.
District Collector Arun K. Vijayan said the departments concerned were working together to contain the disease and urged the public not to panic.
The outbreak was confirmed on Tuesday (August 12) at a pig farm at Kuyiloor, Padiyoor.
The Collector has designated the one-kilometre radius around the affected farm as disease-affected area and 10-kilometre radius as a surveillance zone.
Meanwhile, the sale and distribution of pork and transport of pigs have been banned in the area for three months.
