Former MLA and Congress leader Anil Akkara has levelled serious allegations against Union Minister Suresh Gopi’s family members, claiming that the latter’s brother and sister-in-law each possess two voter ID cards, in violation of election laws.

Addressing the media in Thrissur on Wednesday, Mr. Akkara said election rules permit only one voter ID per individual, making the alleged duplication a criminal offence. He claimed that in Kollam district’s Eravipuram Assembly constituency, Subhash Gopi is registered under voter ID number WLS 0136077, while his wife Rani’s vote is under WLS 0136218. However, in the electoral roll for the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, Subhash’s vote is listed under FVM 1397173 and Rani’s under FVM 1397181.

Mr. Akkara further alleged that for the local body elections, the couple’s names appear in both Kollam Corporation and theThiruvananthapuram Corporation voter lists.

“These details clearly prove that they are not permanent residents of Thrissur,” Mr. Akkara said, adding that the alleged actions represent a blatant violation of the Representation of the People Act. “When a second card is issued, the first must be surrendered and cancelled. Using dual cards is a criminal act,” he stressed.

Mr. Akkara accused the BJP of orchestrating a wider conspiracy, claiming that “it is not just Suresh Gopi’s relatives, but thousands of voters with duplicate IDs have been inserted into Thrissur’s rolls under BJP’s direction.”

He urged the Election Commission to take immediate action, stating that the alleged manipulation undermines the integrity of the democratic process and warrants criminal prosecution.
