Come rain, caution with awareness remains best course for motorists and vehicle owners as heavy downpour tend to turn roads risky for the users.
Amid India Meteorological Department forecast of heavy to very heavy showers in multiple districts of Telangana from August 12-15, insurance companies began driving home this message to motor policyholders. “In view of heavy rains warning, we urge you to stay safe and stay indoors,” Generali Central Insurance (formerly Future Generali India Insurance) said in text message to customers in Hyderabad.
Rain induced damage to vehicle could be stressful, dangerous in several cases and often burns a hole in the pocket.
Increase in claims during monsoon
During monsoon, increase in motor claims for insurers range from 15% to 25%. Instances of water ingress and electrical failures constitute a large portion of the claims across Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Following recent instances of heavy rainfall, private and public sector insurers alike processed thousands of additional claims, with the claims running into several hundred crores, says Narendra Bharindwal, president of Insurance Brokers Association of India (IBAI).
Do not start or drive vehicle if submerged even partially
Motor vehicles are often the first casualties during periods of intense rainfall and flooding and hence the owners are advised to exercise caution. If a vehicle is submerged even partially—up to the wheel level—it should not be started or driven, as doing so may worsen the damage, particularly to the engine and electrical systems, says Varsha Gujarathi, Chief Customer Officer of Universal Sompo General Insurance.
Do’s and don’ts for smooth claim process
On aspects that help in the claim process, she said “take pictures when the waterlogging happened… helps establish water level based on which claim decision are taken. Before any cleaning or repair work, ensure thorough documentation. Take clear videos and photographs of the exterior and interior, including seats, carpet, dashboard, air filter, and engine compartment. This evidence is crucial for a smooth claims process. Vehicles should be towed, not driven, to nearest operational workshop and only after obtaining approval from the insurer necessary work [started].”
Generali Central advised “do not start or crank vehicle if it’s partially submerged and do not drive through water logged area as it may cause serious damage to the engine and internal parts of your car. Possibly park the vehicle away from trees or electric posts.”
Mr. Bharindwal said opting for relevant add-ons such as zero depreciation, engine protection and consumables cover, at the time of purchasing the motor insurance policy, can drastically reduce out-of-pocket expenses.
