Two women advocates, Nilavumozhi and Valarmathi, were picked up by the Chennai police at around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday (August 14, 2025) in Velachery, where protesting conservancy workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had been detained at midnight.
Police officials declined to comment, but indicated that the two women advocates may face charges of instigating the conservancy workers’ protest.
“The two advocates were taken to the Chintadripet police station. A group of lawyers and activists have been urging the police officials at the station since the early hours to allow them to speak with the two advocates, but there has been no response. Even the lawyers have been denied entry into the station,” said G. Selva, CPI(M) district secretary.

After much persuasion, the police brought the duo down from the first floor of the Chintadripet police station and presented them before their friends and activists who had gathered in their support. One of the detained advocates alleged that they were beaten by the police inside the station.
On Thursday morning, they were taken in a police vehicle, reportedly without a number plate, on the pretext of being taken to a hospital. After driving them around the city for an hour, they were finally taken to the Chetpet police station.
