The 79th Independence Day celebrations were held at the Mutthamizh Arignar Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi District Sports Complex here on Friday. District Collector P. Akash hoisted the national flag, accepted the salute from the police contingent, and distributed welfare assistance worth ₹94,37,777 to 60 beneficiaries.

The assistance included scooters with sidewheels for 27 differently abled persons, marriage aid for an ex-serviceman’s family, free sewing machines, mango saplings, drip irrigation kits, vegetable seed packets, power sprayers, tarpaulin sheets, loans to women’s self-help groups, free house site pattas, and Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme cards.

Certificates of appreciation were presented to 172 individuals from various government departments. The event featured cultural performances by schoolchildren. Keelvelur MLA V.P. Nagai Mali and Superintendent of Police S. Selvakumar were present.
