The fire broke out on the ground floor where the raw materials to manufacture plastic mats were stored. Teams of officials from Bescom, fire department and FSL are trying to ascertain the cause of the fire, he said.

The fire spread to the entire building, which has residences on the first, second and third floors. Hearing the sound of the fire and blast from the plastic factor, many residents jumped to the adjacent building and escaped, minimising casualties.

The fire personnel were struggling to reach the third floor where Madan’s family, including his wife and children, were trapped.

The rescue operations were slowed down by the heat and smoke, a senior police officer said.

BBMP officials reached the spot, and were verifying the documents of the building and the plastic factory.
