Communist Party of India (CPI) national executive member and MP P. Santosh Kumar on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of functioning as a “mini Cabinet of the Union government” under the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) influence.

He was inaugurating the CPI Thrissur district council’s ‘Janadhipathya Samrakshana Sadas’ organised to protest alleged manipulation of the voters’ list in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency.

Mr. Santosh Kumar alleged that the BJP’s victory in Thrissur was “not a democratic mandate but the result of election sabotage that wounded the very soul of Thrissur.” He accused the BJP of inserting fake voters and enabling duplicate IDs in the voters’ list, and demanded a comprehensive probe under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court into the incident.

“Despite repeated complaints about poll code violations during the 2024 elections, the Election Commission remained silent. It has failed to even issue warnings to those guilty of blatant misconduct. The Commission has been degraded into nothing more than a mini Cabinet working to please Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the MP said.

Taking aim at the Prime Minister’s recent Red Fort speech, he said Mr. Modi was attempting to glorify the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), “an organisation functioning in primitive ways even after a hundred years,” while insulting India’s century-old democratic traditions.

Criticising Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi, Mr. Santosh Kumar described him as “a political liability and waste,” adding that it was Thrissur’s misfortune to be burdened with such a representative. “The voters’ list fraud is an insult to every citizen of Thrissur who exercised their franchise in good faith,” he said.

He warned that vote theft and electoral malpractice have become the hallmark of the Modi government, calling upon all pro-democracy citizens across India to unite in resistance.

The meeting was presided over by CPI State executive member C.N. Jayadevan. CPI leaders K.P. Rajendran, district secretary K.G. Sivanandan, V.S. Sunil Kumar, MLA P. Balachandran, district panchayat president V.S. Prince, and others participated.
