The Kochi City police arrested two persons with suspected whale ambergris, the possession and sale of which remains prohibited under wildlife protection laws.
The arrested are Jineesh, 39, Saumithran, 38, both residents of Puthuvype in Ernakulam. The Palluruthy police nabbed the accused with 1.20 kilograms of suspected whale ambergris.
The seized item, if proven to be ambergris, would cost around ₹2 crore in the international market. They were nabbed while transporting the suspected ambergris for sale after finalising a deal.
The suspected ambergris was handed over to the Erumeli Forest officer for further proceedings.
The city police had made another seizure of over one kilogram of suspected ambergris from the West Kochi area a week ago. Two youths from Fort Kochi and Lakshadweep were arrested.
