Bharathidasan University celebrated the 133rd National Librarian’s Day recently commemorating the birth anniversary of S.R. Ranganathan hailed as the “Father of Library Science” in India. The event was jointly organised by the Department of Library and Information Science and the National Service Scheme (NSS).
Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi were the chief guests. Mr. Anbil Mahesh announced that a new library would be established in Sirkazhi at a cost of ₹1.5 crore in memory of Ranganathan.
Mr. Chezhiaan highlighted the growth in higher education enrolment in Tamil Nadu, noting that Bharathidasan University had secured 36th place nationally.
During the event, the university honoured several individuals for their contributions to library services. The S.R. Ranganathan Award was presented to Pudukkottai Gnanalaya Krishnamurthi, Library Service Award to Pudukkottai Readers’ Circle president Thangam Moorthi, Best Public Librarian Award to retired Tiruchi District Library Officer A. Po. Sivakumar, and the Best Professor in Library Science Award to retired Annamalai University professor P. Ravichandran.
The university donated books to the Adi Dravidar School in Kattur, Tiruchi.
