Rich tributes were paid to Aravind Eye Hospital’s Chairman emeritus Dr. P. Namperumalsamy in Madurai on Sunday. He passed away on July 24 at the age of 85 years.
At a memorial event organised by Aravind Eye Care System, medical luminaries, colleagues and former students paid their tributes and spoke about his contributions to the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Namperumalsamy, well known as Dr. Nam, received the Padma Shri in 2007. Recollecting their association with Dr. Nam, they said he was very disciplined and a role model to many.
In his condolence message, Chairman of Sankara Nethralaya Dr. T. S. Surendran said Dr. Namperumalsamy was a visionary who had achieved what he had set out to accomplish.
Dr. Lingam Gopal of Sankara Nethralaya said Dr. Namperumalsamy contributed to the field of ophthalmology and its progress in the country.
He was a master surgeon, a strong disciplinarian and an excellent teacher. The vitreoretinal community has lost a giant and one of the core founders of the speciality. His teachings will remain with us and guide us forever. His legacy will continue forever.
Dr. Taraprasad Das, Vice-Chairman Emeritus of LV Prasad Eye Institute, recollected his association with Dr. Namperumalsamy. He said Dr. Nam was not only a great teacher but also an able administrator who led by examples.
He was a pioneer who had built a legacy and dedicated himself to the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Partha Biswas, president of All India Ophthalmology Society said Dr. Namperumalsamy’s benevolence and blessings were with them. He recollected his association with Dr. Nam and Aravind Eye Hospital. He said Dr. Nam and the institution were his mentors.
He added that Dr. Nam was a pillar of support who had contributed so much to society.
Dr. Meena Chakrabarti, Dr. V.M. Loganathan, Dr. Ramesh, Mr. Ravi Mehra, Mr. Ambai Manivannan and Mrs. Premalatha of Mahatma Schools spoke about the contributions of Dr. Namperumalsamy at the memorial event.
Dr. G. Natchiar, Dr. R. D Ravindran, Dr. N. Venkatesh Prajna, Dr. M.Srinivasan, Dr. Kim and Dr. R. D. Thulasiraj of Aravind Eye Hospital, the management and other staff paid their tributes to Dr. Namperumalsamy.
