The family of missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed on Wednesday said they were not satisfied with the investigation into his disappearance and would once again appeal against the court’s acceptance of the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report.

Speaking at a public meeting organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) at the Constitution Club, the family, along with teachers, students, and MPs, denounced the handling of the case and vowed to continue the struggle for justice.

“We will go to court again to file an appeal against the closure report. The investigation was not carried out properly, and we are not satisfied with it. We will continue this fight for justice,” said Haseeb Ahmed, Najeeb’s younger brother.

Najeeb Ahmed, a 27-year-old M.Sc. biotechnology student, went missing on October 15, 2016, after a scuffle with students allegedly linked to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The CBI closed the case in 2018, citing a lack of evidence. It was reopened after petitions, but a Delhi court finally closed it again this June.

‘We will not forget’

Fatima Nafees, Najeeb’s mother, reiterated her determination to keep his memory alive. “As long as I am alive, I will keep speaking out about what happened to my son. I don’t want there to be another Najeeb. With all the students’ support, we will not forget my son or let anyone forget,” she said.

Leaders across academia and politics also expressed solidarity. MP Manoj Jha called the case closure “a deep failure of the system”. JNU Teachers’ Association president Surajit Majumdar said, “This is not just about one student. It is about every student’s right to safety and justice. After all these years, the police still don’t know what happened. JNUTA stands firmly with Najeeb’s family.”
