Concerns have been raised over the poor facilities and dilapidated condition of a government school at M.Kottur in Vilathikulam taluk of the district.

M.Kottur Government Higher Secondary School was inaugurated in 1959, when there were no schools for higher education within a radius of about 20 km. However, over the past two decades, due to increase in the number of schools and establishment of private schools, its student strength has gradually declined. At present, around 100 students study from class VI to X in the school.

A. Varadharajan, an activist from the region, said the students were struggling due to the poor condition of the toilets. Also, the dilapidated old structure on the school premises should be demolished immediately as it posed a serious threat to the students.

A. Ramamoorthy, headmaster (Incharge), highlighted the poor condition of the science lab in the school and the dilapidated roof in the classrooms. The school was also in dire need of drinking water facility and proper toilets for the students.
