Two police constables, who were serving in one of the Highway Patrol teams attached to the Tiruchi City Police, were arrested recently on charges of assaulting and robbing a motorist a couple of months ago in the city. A member of the Home Guard attached to the Tiruchi City Police has been arrested on the same charges along with the two constables.
Although the alleged offence was committed in June, a complaint in this regard was preferred by Brahadeeswaran of Kulithalai in Karur district with the Gandhi Market Crime police only a few days ago. The names of the arrested were given as Ashok Kumar and Punniya Kumar, both constables attached to the Highway Patrol-3 team, and Home Guard member Veeramani. Punniya Kumar was the driver of the vehicle.
Police said the charges against the two constables was that while on duty in uniform along the service road of the Chennai bypass on one night in mid-June, the two apparently asked Mr. Brahadeeswaran to stop his two-wheeler.
The two constables allegedly assaulted him and robbed him of ₹5,000 cash from the latter. They allegedly robbed ₹4,000 in cash from Mr. Brahadeeswaran and reportedly asked him to remit another ₹1,000 in a particular QR code. The QR code was later found to be that of Veeramani.
Sources said Mr. Brahadeeswaran, who works in a spare parts shop at Kulithalai in Karur district, had come to Tiruchi to buy some spares and medicines and was returning when the alleged crime was committed. He reportedly suffered internal injury in his ear due to the alleged assault.
Acting on the complaint, the Gandhi Market Crime police arrested the two constables and the Home Guard member a couple of days ago after a detailed investigation and booked a case against them. The constables had apparently committed many such crimes in the past. All the three accused were remanded in judicial custody. The two constables were placed under suspension and the Home Guard member was dismissed, the sources added.
