The Periodic Labour Force Survey for July, released here on Monday (August 18, 2025) by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, and prepared by the Labour Bureau, found that the unemployment rate in the country has come down by 0.4 percentile points to 5.2% in July from 5.6% in June. The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) of women showed a marginal increase from 24.5% in June to 25.5% in July.
The LFPR for men is 57.4%, and for all persons it0 is 41.4%.
According to the survey, the LFPR according to the current weekly status (CWS) is the number of persons either employed or unemployed on average in a week of seven days preceding the date of the survey. LFPR for persons aged 15 years and above in the country stood at 54.9%, for the same group of people in rural areas it was 56.9%, and the LFPR was 50.7% in urban areas.
LFPR among rural males aged 15 years and above was 78.1% and for rural females, it was 36.9%. “In urban areas, the LFPR among females of age 15 years and above during July 2025 was 25.8% compared to 75.1% observed for males of the same age group,” the survey noted.
The unemployment rate for persons of age 15 years and above in the country stood at 5.2%. In rural areas, it was 4.4%, and it was 7.2% in urban areas. For rural females, the unemployment rate was found to be 3.9%, and among rural males, it was 4.6% during July 2025. For urban females, the unemployment rate was 8.7%, compared to the 6.6% observed for urban males.

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which defines the proportion of those who are employed among the total population, in rural areas for persons aged 15 years and above, was 54.4%. In June, it was 53.3%. The WPR in urban areas was 47%, and at the national level, it was 52%, 0.8 percentile points higher than in June.
The Labour Bureau surveyed 89,505 (49,355 in rural areas and 40,150 in urban areas) households, and the number of persons surveyed was 3,79,222 (2,16,832 in rural areas and 1,62,390 in urban areas).
