With a large number of transport workers employed with the solid waste concessionaire agency on strike, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is staring at a sanitation crisis in the city.

About 2,000-2,500 workers, including driver’s and helpers of the transport vehicles reportedly declared a strike demanding fair wages.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), under which the workers have unionised, issued a statement demanding revised wage agreement for the workers.

The agency, Re-Sustainability, is responsible for transportation of solid waste from transfer stations to the treatment facility at Jawaharnagar. With the drivers striking work, the garbage reportedly remained unlifted at the transfer stations.

Neither the GHMC officials nor the Re-Sustainability representatives were available for their version.
