A government doctor was killed and 17 others were injured when a government-run bus went berserk and rammed into them when they were walking on the road in Chengalpattu on Monday morning.

The accident occurred at 8:30 am when the bus, coming from Kalpakkam, reportedly had brake failure. The deceased was identified as S. Manikumar, 45, a paediatrician, at Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital.

Another doctor, Praveen Kumar, who was walking with him, was seriously injured and was being treated at the same hospital. His condition is stable, police said. The two doctors had just arrived from Chromepet by train and were walking to work when the bus ran off the road and hit them. The bus then crashed into a private bus coming from the opposite direction.

Seventeen people, including passengers and pedestrians, were injured in the accident. Injured were treated at the Government Hospital, Chengalpattu. Health Minister Ma. Subramanian visited the hospital and paid tribute to Dr. Manikumar and instructed doctors to give the best care to the injured.

Police have filed a case and are looking into possible brake failure and the driver’s role in the accident.
