One person was killed in an explosion near the Madhyamgram High School in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district early on Monday (August 18, 2025)
Sacchidananda Mishra, 25, from Uttar Pradesh succumbed to his injuries after he was rushed to the Barasat Medical College and Hospital.
“The investigation is underway. Experts are probing the situation,” Atish Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police of Barasat, said.
According to information gathered from local CCTV cameras, Mr. Mishra was reportedly walking down the road adjoining the school around 1 a.m. on Monday. He was seen carrying a bag that exploded, maiming him on the spot.
On Monday, the police and the bomb disposal squad inspected the contents of the bag and checked for the possible presence of explosive devices.
Forensic experts as well as a delegation from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) visited the spot.
The explosion, which occurred in a congested area of Madhyamgram underneath a flyover and close to a school and a market, led to panic among local residents.
“The explosion occurred at a place where guardians of school-going children sit and wait during school hours. The police investigation will reveal why someone from a different State was present there at that hour,” Trinamool Minister and Madhyamgram MLA Rathin Ghosh told presspersons after visiting the site.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Suvendu Adhikari said the NIA should be more active in West Bengal.
“This is the result of the West Bengal government patronising terrorist organisations. No one is safe in West Bengal,” Mr. Adhikari said.
