The residents of Andal Nagar in Pozhichalur are facing several problems due to the letting of sewage and dumping of garbage into an open public space.
Cowl Bazaar Main Road, located behind the Chennai airport is the arterial road connecting residents of Pozhichalur, Pallavaram, and Chromepet with Kolapakkam, Thandalam and Gerugambakkam. The residents of Bharathiyar Street in Andal Nagar are facing health issues because of poor conservancy by the Pozhichalur panchayat and the rampant letting of sewage in the open storm water drain.
A few houses at the junction of Andal Nagar-Cowl Bazaar Main Road are surrounded by garbage and stagnant waste water.
T. Santosh, a resident of Andal Nagar, said garbage, particularly food waste, was being dumped at the junction of the road where an electricity transformer is installed. “During heavy rains the transformer gets flooded causing electrocution to stray cattle that feed on the food waste. The waste dumped near the transformer are never removed for many days with garbage lying in mounds.
H. Varadarajan, a resident of the Bharathiyar street, rued about the pathetic state of affairs due to the absence of placing any garbage container and poor conservancy by the Pozhichalur panchayat.
B. Vanaja, president of the Pozhichalur panchayat, said action would be taken to remove garbage dumped around the distribution transformer immediately.
