Seven out of the eight survivors in the sensational Pollachi sexual assault case on Tuesday received the compensation awarded by the trial court in its verdict on May 13.
Sources said that the total compensation of ₹85 lakh ordered by the Mahila Court, Coimbatore, was transferred to the bank accounts of the seven survivors through the State Legal Services Authority. The Hindu in its columns in July had highlighted the delay in the transfer of the compensation.
Trial court judge R. Nandhini Devi, who sentenced all the nine accused in the case to life imprisonment, had ordered a total compensation of ₹85 lakh for seven survivors, who were listed as A, B, C, D, E, G and H in the judgment to protect their identities. The compensation for them are — A ₹2 lakh; B ₹15 lakh; C and D ₹10 lakh each; E ₹8 lakh; G ₹15 lakh; and H ₹25 lakh.
One survivor, identified as ‘F’ in case files, was not awarded compensation as she had not been examined as prosecution witness as per the judgment order.
In addition to the ₹85 lakh awarded by the court on Tuesday, the seven survivors already received a compensation of ₹25 lakh each announced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin following the verdict
V. Surendra Mohan, Special Public Prosecutor for CBI who appeared in the case, said new bank accounts were opened for the survivors and both compensations were transferred to their accounts, by protecting their identities as ordered in the judgment.
Sources added that out of the nine convicts, only two had paid the fine slapped on them by the trial court. The court had slapped a total fine of ₹1,55,000 on them. They added none of the convicts are known to have moved a higher court, appealing against the verdict of the trial court.
