A day after a blaze killed four employees of Mahajan Electronics in west Delhi’s Raja Garden, Delhi police on Tuesday arrested the owner of the store, Manas Mahajan, for allegedly not maintaining proper safety precautions.

“After registering a first information report, multiple teams were formed to investigate the matter, and the owner of the store was arrested on Tuesday,” a police officer said, adding that the fire broke out on the second floor of the four-storey building.

“There was no automatic suppression system, separate exit, fire blankets, fire hoses or any arrangement to tackle a blaze in its early stage,” he said after a crime team took photographs and inspected the site.

According to police, the fire department teams had to break a wall to rescue five workers who were trapped in the store premises.

The blaze was reported to the Delhi Fire Services at 3.08 p.m. on Monday, and five fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

Five people were removed from the building and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, during which Aayushi, 22, Payal, 20, Amandeep Kaur, 22, and Ravi, 28, succumbed to injuries, while another worker, Sandeep Sharma, 25, is undergoing treatment.
