While hockey in India is synonymous with the field version, the one played on ice, popular elsewhere, draws little attention.
With few people aware of India even having a national ice hockey team, it was an achievement against all odds when the Indian women’s team won a historic bronze at the IIHF Asia Cup in UAE last month.
Their inspirational journey and achievement has now been documented in a four-minute documentary titled ‘Sound of Courage’ on Pocket FM, the world’s largest audio series platform, as part of its India, Kuch Acha Suno campaign.
From battling stereotypes to training in challenging conditions with scarce facilities, including training in borrowed men’s gear, the film highlights the journeys of the team members and their struggles in the tough Ladakh terrain.
Battling family resistance, societal pressure and being mocked for playing a “men’s sport,” the film features Indian team players including captain Tsewang Chuskit, Sonam Angmo, Sonam Angmo (Kanji), Skarma Rinchen, Rinchen Dolma, Sherap Zangmo, Padma Chorol, Rigzin Yangdol, Dechen Dolker and Diskit C Angmo.
“Our journey was filled with doubt back home but our association believed in us. We chose to listen to our inner voice. Trusting yourself can change everything,” Tsewang says.
