A 55-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by a mentally-challenged youth near Annur in Coimbatore district on Thursday.
The police identified the deceased as S. Sakunthala of Sokkampalayam near Annur.
According to the police, she was attacked by an 18-year-old mentally-challenged youth from Bharathi Nagar at Sokkampalayam. The youth allegedly escaped from his house around 3 p.m. and started chasing people. He entered an agricultural field where Sakunthala and a few others were engaged in work and attacked them with stones.
As they tried to run away, Sakunthala fell on the ground. The youth smashed her head with a stone and she died on the spot. People caught the youth and handed him over to his parents, the police said.
Neighbours alleged that the youth did not have his regular medicines on Thursday, which led to the sudden episode of rage.
The Annur police shifted the body to a government hospital for post-mortem. Further investigation is on.
