Following the adoption of the Karnataka Civil Services (Regulation of Transfer of Medical Officers and Other Staff) (Amendment) Bill 2025, the State government has now stipulated a maximum of five years tenure for administrative posts under the Health Department in the Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA).

This is to prevent overstay and to ensure equitable distribution, transparent, fair and effective management of postings to administrative positions across the State, stated a Government Order (GO) issued in this regard on Friday.

“Upon completion of five-year tenure, such officers will be transferred in the ensuing general transfers, either to administrative positions outside the GBA or to other posts,  as deemed appropriate by the government,” stated the GO.

Officers who are liable for transfer out of the GBA as per Section 6(1) of the amended Act, will not be eligible for administrative positions within the GBA. This will also apply to those who have been recently transferred out of the GBA till completion of the prescribed minimum tenure in their current post.

No private practice

Officers posted to administrative positions will not be eligible to engage in private practice. This restriction is intended to ensure uninterrupted availability for administrative responsibilities and to avoid conflict of interest between private commitments and public duty.

Any violation of this condition will be treated as misconduct and can invite disciplinary action under the Karnataka Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1957, in addition to immediate removal from the administrative post.

Medical specialists posted in administrative positions should mandatorily render specialist services, in positions which are designated for their specialisation, for not less than six hours per week in government District/Taluk hospitals or any other government institution within their jurisdiction, as permitted by their controlling authority, in addition to their administrative duties.
