 NEW DELHI

Two days after being attacked during a public hearing programme at her camp office in Civil Lines, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday made her first public appearance in Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar and reaffirmed her commitment to the Capital’s development.

At an event organised by the Association of Wholesale Ready-Made Garments Dealers in Ashok Bazaar of Gandhi Nagar – considered one of the largest ready-made garment markets in Asia – Ms. Gupta said Delhi had lagged behind over the past decade but was now poised to reclaim its lead position.

She said the eastern parts of the city across the Yamuna river (Yamunapaar) would see rapid development as there is no shortage of funds.

“The city is moving ahead on a new path of development. We will spare no effort in placing Yamunapaar, or the trans-Yamuna area, once again at the forefront of Delhi’s growth. Gandhi Nagar’s garment sector is not just a hub for Delhi but for the entire country. We will work towards elevating it to the international stage,” Ms. Gupta told traders.

The Chief Minister urged East Delhi MP and Union Minister of State for Road Transport Harsh Malhotra, along with Trans Yamuna Development Board Chairman Arvinder Singh Lovely, to prepare detailed assessments of the region’s needs.

She also announced that new route mapping of the Delhi Transport Corporation’s electric buses would begin from trans-Yamuna to improve connectivity.

“I will continue to struggle alongside you till Delhi gets its rights. This is my unwavering resolve,” she said, declaring that she was “neither scared nor defeated” .

Police quiz five persons

Meanwhile, the Delhi police said they have questioned five persons in Rajkot, Gujarat, in connection with the attack on the CM. The accused, Rajesh Bhai Kimji Bhai Sakariya, 41, was arrested and booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita dealing with attempt to murder, among other offences. He has been remanded in police custody for five days.
