Ten in 30 Chief Ministers have serious criminal charges against them.

Of the 30 Chief Ministers, 12 have declared criminal cases against themselves, the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) said in an analysis report. The report comes amid a joint parliamentary committee is set to scrutise three Bills that allow removal of Ministers, including Chief Ministers and the Prime Minister, if arrested for serious criminal cases.

Telangana’s Chief Minister Anumala Revanth Reddy has the most cases at 89, as well as the most number of serious IPC charges at 72.

A serious criminal case is a non-bailable, cognizable offence where the maximum punishment is for five years, or an electoral offence. Some criminal cases falling under this category include assault, attempt to murder, murder, kidnap and crimes against women and children.

Assets

When it comes to total assets owned by Chief Ministers, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reported the most (₹931.8 crore) and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee the least (₹0.15 crore).

On average, a Chief Minister’s assets were worth ₹54.42 crore, with the average self-income per Chief Minister was ₹13.34 lakh. Most CMs reported wealth between one to ₹50 crores, with three reporting wealth more than ₹50 crores.

Age and education profile

Barring four CMs (Jharkhand, Punjab, Kerala and Chhattisgarh), all CMs had completed at least a graduate degree. The highest educational profile was the doctorate level, with two CMs (Madhya Pradesh, Assam).

Most CMs were aged between 44 to 60 years, with the youngest being the CMs of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya at 44 years of age. The oldest CM came from Kerala (77 years). All were men except for Delhi’s Rekha Gupta and West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee.
