The 27th State conference of the Students Federation of India (SFI) has elected S. Mridhula as its president. She is the first woman president of the state unit of the SFI.

“The foremost challenge before us is to politicise students. Student activities and democratic movements on campuses are viewed as terrorist activities by all state governments. Except for Kerala, no state in India, including Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, are ready to conduct student union elections,” said Ms Mridhula, who has completed her postgraduate degree in Sociology from Madras University.

A theatre artiste actively involved in groups such as Chennai Kalaikuzhu, Kattiakari and Marapachi, Ms Mridhula said she plans to register for a PhD. She has served as the secretary of the SFI’s Central Chennai Unit, joint secretary of the state unit, and was elected as the national vice-president at the recent conference held in Kerala.

“Most of the SFI leaders have pursued research while working for the organisation. I will follow the same path,” said Mridhula, who will be working full-time for the SFI.
