The Mahila Court in Tiruvallur district convicted and sentenced a 47-year-old man to life-imprisonment for the murder of his wife in 2012. According to the police, he set her ablaze after she refused to give money for consuming liquor. The accused, identified as V.Suresh, (who was 34-year-old then), was a resident of Chinnakavanam village near Ponneri. He had a quarrel with his wife Packiyalakshmi demanding money for consuming liquor. As she refused to give money, he set her ablaze. Later, she died in a hospital. Suresh was arrested on charges of murder. At the conclusion of trial, the Mahila Court pronounced the verdict convicting convicted him and imposed a fine of Rs ₹5,500 on him.
