The Coimbatore District (Rural) Police carried out storming operations in different parts of the district on Sunday (August 24, 2025) that resulted in seizure of ganja, weapons, gutkha and other contraband substances.
The police also arrested 12 persons, including a Sudanese national, on charges of possessing ganja, weapons, and banned tobacco products.
A total of 91 police teams comprising of 412 personnel were involved in the drive titled ‘Operation Clean Covai’ that was carried out in the morning.
Coimbatore District (Rural) Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan said the operation headed by two Deputy Superintendents of Police and 10 inspectors primarily focused on Madukkarai and Chettipalayam areas.
The police seized 6.5 kg of ganja, eight weapons, and 52 kg of prohibited tobacco products during the storming operation.
Mr. Karthikeyan said the arrested Sudanese national had pursued a degree from a college in Coimbatore. He continued to stay in the district as he had arrears in some subjects. However, he started peddling drugs. A knuckles was seized from him, he said.

According to the SP, Sunday’s storming operation was carried out based on specific information on the circulation of drugs, gutkha and the presence of history-sheeters in certain areas.
Ten days ago, the police searched a residence of college students at Chettipalayam based on specific information and found that they were in the preparation for an assault with the support of their school friends from outside. The bid for an attack was foiled by the police, said Mr. Karthikeyan.
Sunday’s operation covered accommodations of students, history-sheeters from other districts moved to Coimbatore and migrant workers.
