Animal welfare groups and volunteers in Coimbatore urged the Corporation to step up sterilisation drives for stray dogs and took out an awareness rally at Race Course on Sunday (August 24, 2025).

The rally followed a recent Supreme Court order directing that sterilised and vaccinated dogs be returned to their original areas and that local bodies set up designated feeding zones.

Over 100 participants, including multiple animal welfare groups, volunteers, and pet owners advocating for the responsible treatment of stray dogs, carried banners and raised slogans emphasising the importance of sterilisation and adoption in controlling stray dog numbers. They also called on authorities to strengthen coordination between municipal staff and animal welfare organisations.

“We urge the public to feed stray dogs responsibly, and local bodies should ensure mandatory vaccination and sterilisation. Kind treatment helps keep them healthy and prevents aggressive behaviour,” said Maya Mahajan, a social activist who participated in the rally.

They appealed to citizens to adopt local dogs to help control the population.
