Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday (August 25, 2025) inaugurated Chennai Institute of Journalism (CIJ) at Kotturpuram in Chennai. He also visited a studio at the institute and interacted with students of the first batch. The State government had sanctioned a sum of ₹7.75 crore in setting up CIJ under the Companies Act, 2013. The institute is located adjacent to the Anna Centenary Library.
The State government had set up CIJ, which offers a postgraduate diploma programme in journalism, both in Tamil medium and English medium, from the academic year 2025-26. It had appointed former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu and Director, Kasturi and Sons Limited N. Ravi as CIJ board’s chairperson and former Readers’ Editor of The Hindu A.S. Panneerselvan as CIJ’s director-general. Both of them, along with other members of the board, participated in the inaugural function.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Information Minister M.P. Saminathan, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian; Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani, MP Vijay Vasanth; Executive Vice-Chairperson of State Planning Commission J. Jeyaranjan; Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Imayam alias V. Annamalai; and senior journalists from various media houses were among those present at the inauguration.
An official release said the curriculum has been designed to equip students with skills required for print, television, radio, and digital media streams. “This institute is also set to sign agreements with international educational institutions,” it said and added it would prepare students for the ever-evolving technology era.
On the occasion, senior journalist M. Gunasekaran presented a cheque for ₹1.10 lakh to the Chief Minister to institute the RmT. Sambantham Memorial Endowment (in memory of former Dinamani Editor) for the benefit of students from marginalised sections.
