Three students were seriously injured following the collapse of the lintel of a window at Government Boys Higher Primary School, Kote, Devanahalli town, near Bengaluru, on August 25.

One student’s left leg was broken. Of the three injured students, one remains admitted at Hosmat hospital while another has been shifted to Victoria Hospital for further treatment. One student, who was admitted at Bowring hospital, has been discharged.

Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa visited the injured students in the hospitals on August 26.

He assured the parents that all medical expenses will be fully borne by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL). He directed officials to monitor the students’ health round-the-clock.

The Minister instructed officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out a thorough inspection of the school building and submit a detailed report.

Senior district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bengaluru Rural Zilla Panchayat, visited the school and issued necessary directions.

“The safety of children is our top priority. The government will ensure proper care, medical support and strict action to prevent such incidents in the future,” Madhu Bangarappa said.

Complaint against BEL

The headmaster of the school has filed a complaint against the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which constructed the building under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

“The building of this school was constructed by BEL in 2015 through CSR funds. It is not a very old building. However, due to poor construction work, three students were injured when the lintel of a window collapsed. Therefore, the headmaster of school has filed a complaint against BEL,” said Bylaanjanappa, Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Bengaluru Rural district.
